ENGAGED: RACHEL + KYLE

Kyle and Rachel’s engagement session was one of the last I photographed this fall season. We had to contend with a little wind and the sweetest black lab following us around but we got these memories captured. Loved that they invited me out to Rachel’s family farmstead. She showed me places that she explored as a child. I always believe if the place where we photograph holds special meaning it will come through in the images.
Congratulations to you Rachel and Kyle! I’m so very happy for you and excited to spend your April wedding day by your side.

SHELBY + NOAH

As I sit here and watch the blinking cursor I wonder how to accurately describe this beautiful wedding day. I hope the images and the slideshow at the end will help but here’s a few words and things I noticed as I lugged around my gear on this unseasonably warm June Saturday. I had my favorite second photographer ever, Angie, with me and we split up to capture the guys and the girls getting ready. I met the girls at the Omaha Sheraton Hotel as they primped and drank mimosas. Shelby, the bride with the radiant smile, was relaxed and excited yet never losing touch of her role as Mama to her daughter. With a makeup artist and a hairstylist hovering over Shelby took time to cuddle her lil blondie daughter and help comfort when she was upset. Being a Mama myself this really impressed me. We never truly get a day off from these roles. Even on Shelby’s Wedding day she was putting her daughter’s needs first.

Shelby and Noah’s first glance took place in the one shady spot we could find on the grounds of Lauritzen Gardens. His reaction was priceless and his chivalrous  gesture of handing Shelby a hanky was so very sweet.

Isn’t Shelby radiant? She has such a classic “girl next door” beauty. I love her sun-kissed freckles and kind, warm eyes.

Their wedding party was a favorite to work with. Everyone was smiling and having a genuinely great time together.

I noticed Noah’s soft spot for little ones. He was always patient and gave his full attention when they were talking with him.

Engaged: Megan & Richard

Megan and Richard, these two lit up the evening. They were even kind enough to invite me to share a pizza with them after the session. And since I’m a mama of two that doesn’t get out often, I took them up on it and enjoyed every minute of being the “third wheel”. See, that’s what engagement sessions are for me, a chance to truly get to know my clients, see how they love on each other, learn about what’s important to them, hear their childhood stories and how they first met. I enjoy connecting face to face in this digital world.

Megan looked stunning in her emerald colored dress that matched her amazing eyes. Richard’s sense of style is exactly what I hope for when I show up to photograph an engagement. These two pretty much just melt into each other when they’re together. They’re completely comfortable and at ease together. And then, in the next instance Richard is making Megan laugh out loud with complete ease. Out of all the traits that are important in a marriage I believe the ability to laugh is the most important. Megan is set in that department since Richard is a comedian. Check him out and you’ll know what I mean when I say we laughed all night!

Kudos to Healthy Glow Spray Tan, Dani Cooper and Alicia’s Makeup Artistry for helping Megan look and feel rockstar amazing for her session!

Preferred Vendor Spotlight: Delectables by Angie LLC

It’s not often I get to take my daughter to work with me. Fortunately for London’s sake, this was a good day to tag a long. Frosting, sprinkles, and strawberries were just a few of the ingredients Angie was preparing to use. Everything a 5 year old dreams about!

I love sharing these preferred vendor spotlights with my clients. I only recommend the best local businesses! People that I would hire (or have already hired numerous times) myself to be a part of my own family’s special events.

Angie, from Delectables in Gretna, Nebraska, was kind enough to invite me into her kitchen for an interview and photo session of her creating amazing treats. While we chatted about her business, I could see how much she really loves what she does. Angie bakes for numerous events, weddings, birthday parties, graduations, christenings. She is the only wedding cake vendor I’ve met that stays at the reception to cut and serve the cake to ensure that the correct amount of portions are served.

I’ve hired Angie on multiple occasions because her cakes are not only beautiful but they taste incredible. She’s created masterpieces for each of my kid’s birthdays year after year. I have to admit, I enjoy photographing the frosted delicacies as much as I enjoy eating them. I always capture a little cake session with my kids on their birthday for their memory books.

What sets your company apart from other bakeries?

I learned in culinary school that most if not all local bakeries make all of their products using mixes. I knew that in order to make it in this business I had to be different then them. So I decided to make everything from scratch using real ingredients. My customers notice the difference and become regular customers. I do not advertise and solely rely on word of mouth for my clients.

Can you describe the most unique cake that you’ve ever designed for your clients?

One of my most favorite cakes was for a Sweet 16 party. It was a tiered cake with tapered cake layers and was a multitude of fun colors and was sprayed with pearl dust. There was also a lot of fondant swirls coming out of the cake in many directions. I was very nervous while delivering it. All of the stress was worth if when I walked in and saw their faces. That is always the best part, everyone is very happy to see their cake when it is delivered.

If you could only eat one type of dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?

In culinary school, in our cake class, we made traditional European cakes and I learned to love cakes with many different textures, Opera Cake, Hummingbird and such. Meringues, pastry creams, sponge cake, nut layers, they are the best!!

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

I’m lucky enough to still work from home, so I get to create my schedule, which gives me time to volunteer in the community. I have spent a lot of time volunteering for the local Chamber of Commerce and have been on the Board for the last 3 years. Through the volunteer work with the Chamber I have been learning a lot about our local City government and decided to run for City Council. I’m not one to sit idle. With having two little ones in grade school and my oldest in the Marine Corp., I deserve the the occasional date night with my amazing husband.

PREFERRED VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: CARRIE DAYTON EVENTS & CONSULTING

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in a person’s life. There is so much excitement around the idea of starting a life with your loved one and sharing the news with your friends and family. However, all this anticipation is soon joined by the stress of planning the big day. There are so many things to accomplish in order to plan the wedding you’ve envisioned and as far away as it may be, there never seems to be enough time. Having someone in your corner who is 100% invested in one of the most important days of your life is vital to your experience on your wedding day. I often hear these words from brides,”Why should I hire a wedding planner?” I understand that hiring a wedding planner is an extra expense, but it is well worth it! I look at a wedding planner as the vendor team leader and your insurance policy.  They do so much more than you can imagine and will handle the things that may not go smoothly so that you don’t have to.

Carrie Dayton is an incredible wedding planner in the Omaha area. I absolutely love working with her! Last year we worked together on three weddings and each one turned out beautifully. Each time I arrived for the different celebrations I knew there weren’t any surprises that Carrie couldn’t handle.

I asked Carrie to share her top three reasons why having her services are a benefit for couples on their wedding day.

  • So a couple can enjoy all the love and magic moments that happen on a wedding day. Those in the industry know that there are many, many magical, memorable moments that can unfold for a couple and their families…IF they are not worried about logistics, design and timing. We work hard to make sure all the details, desires and dreams are being carried out. It is our belief by focusing on all of the above, the magic that should be present in a wedding day has the foundation to flourish.
  • Our foundation is based on helping couples assemble the right team that will make it happen for them. We strongly believe that the personality of the couple should fit well with the partners they hire to implement their day.  By several detailed, in-depth discussions with the couple, we obtain a strong understanding of who they are as individuals and a couple, what they like and dislike and what they want the day to be about. This understanding helps us short-list the right partners and carryout all of the details of their day.
  • We truly love weddings, couples and their families. We have fun! We work hard at ensuring our couples have a great time planning their wedding.  This is an exciting, special experience and it is important to enjoy the ride. We work with couples to limit the stress of wedding planning, so when their wedding day happens, they are rested, relaxed and in love

If you’ve ever met Carrie you know what I mean when I say she has an incredibly positive personality. She works diligently but also knows how to have a good time. Here’s a little more insight from the best Wedding Planner in Omaha.

  • What was the most unique wedding you’ve ever planned?
    • This is a hard question. Each couple is so special, I feel every wedding we’ve planned has been unique in its own way. It is so important to me to truly understand what makes every couple special/different and carry that through their wedding day.  We have done things such as leading guests on a parade from the ceremony to the reception by a Mariachi band; handed a newly married couple Carona’s on their way up the aisle before boarding a catamaran reception cruise; and served Kolaches as a course before dessert.
  • What is your secret for staying calm under pressure, and how do you deal with day-of disasters?
    • I believe that planners are not judged by how well they plan an event. They are judged by how well they handle situations that were not foreseeable in anyway.  Losing your cool in the middle of a crisis, does absolutely nothing. There is no time to point fingers or argue when something goes wrong. It is about problem-solving and executing a solution with the team that the couple has created to implement their event.  The day after the event, is the time to reflect; develop a strategy for that issue and form a plan to ensure that particular crisis doesn’t happen to a future client.
  • Describe your dream wedding, where would it be, what would you serve, who would officiate?
    • I have seen so many weddings in 20 years, it is difficult to choose just one “dream wedding.” Whatever it would be, I am sure it would be small, intimate and full of love.  Places that come to mind:  A beach in the British Virgin Islands, the wilderness in the Colorado Mountains, a cliff overlooking the ocean in Northern California. I have classic food tastes. I love traditional food that is done extremely well.  I would do a wonderful soup or unique salad followed by a classic filet mignon with lobster tail and the best wedding cake ever for dessert…oh, and S’mores by a campfire (my favorite dessert).  Wine would play in important part in pulling the meal together.  I would prefer a wine with each course.  As for an officiant, I would prefer someone close to me who knew all the nuances of the relationship and could speak to what they have seen and how to make it successful in the future.
